Autodesk Industrial Machinery Virtual Summit - 25th September 2012

Alias Design to Inventor interoprability

  After working with a number of leading customers to help them make better use of Design data I decided to clean up and presentation that I have been showing. Alias Design creates surface models that can be opened directly in Inventor. The model can have engineering details added without compromising the design. Changes made to the surface model can be made within Alias, using Alias history based surfacing tools to quickly change designs as needed. Once the updates have been checked into Autodesk Vault they can be pulled into Inventor and any previous engineering details will be updated based on the new surface design. As the design develops, designers can use Design for Manufacture in Inventor to validate the design for engineering and manufacture, making sure they are in control of the design at all stages. This enables them to provide a better design model earlier in the process.

Autodesk University 2012

Its that time of the year, time to register for Autodesk University - the largest gathering of Autodesk software users on the planet!

This years event will be taking place from 27 November to 29 November at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Convention Centre in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada. If you've never been to Autodesk University before, its definitely worthwhile attending, its amazing how much you can get out of 3 days in Vegas with around 9,000 other users of Autodesk software.

Many people think, its just a jolly to Vegas but in reality, its 3 days of pretty hardcore learning about how you can get the most from the investment you\your company has made in Autodesk software such as Inventor, Revit, Vault, 3ds Max, PLM 360 etc. Its amazing how many people come away learning how they can use the tools to do their job better, quicker and more accurately.

Its not just at the classes or workshops that you will learn some of the best tips & tricks, but you get to find out some great info during coffee break, lunch or dinner when you get talking to other attendees and you find out how others are overcoming certain challenges or using their Autodesk software to do their job. There are lots of 'eureka' moments where you think to yourself "I didn't know that" or "I didn't think of doing it that way" - and then you can't wait to get back to the office to try out what you have learnt.

One thing that is always a challenge is convincing your manager that going to Vegas for a few days isn't about sunshine and casinos and that its an investment in helping to improve the way the business works today. Project Factory.Modz Technology Preview 2 available

For those of you that downloaded Project Factory Modz Preview 1, you may of noticed the message on or after September 1st telling you that the software had time bombed.

As of now Preview 2 is available on Autodesk Labs.

If you haven't already tried it out, it's a nice add-in preview to the 2013 Product or Factory Design Suite that helps simulate the processes within a Factory layout. You can simply simulate a conveyoring system, visually demonstrating the transport and transfer within a process. Powered by Autodesk^® Kynapse^® there is even artificial intelligence, so if obstacles are placed in the way of a product transfer (such as a person coming across a safety fence) it'll automatically change it's path to go around that obstruction.
